The Edmonton Police Service (EPS) is investigating 12 instances of objects being thrown from overpasses onto Whitemud Drive in West Edmonton.

Between March 27 and June 22 of this year, police have responded to 12 incidents where rocks or other heavy pieces of debris were reportedly thrown from pedestrian bridges onto Whitemud Drive between 149 Street and 184 Street. The incidents have caused significant damage to vehicles and put the occupants at risk of serious injury.

"In 2002, a 75-year-old man was killed in an incident like this, and two teenagers were charged with manslaughter," says Cst. Tylar Heigh, with EPS West Branch. "Throwing objects at moving vehicles can have severe consequences, including the death of civilians and serious criminal charges for the accused."

At this time, it is not known if these west Edmonton incidents are linked to several similar events that occurred in south Edmonton, mostly near 53 Avenue and Whitemud Drive, in late 2023 and early 2024.

Anyone who has information about these incidents is asked to contact the EPS at 780-423-4567or #377 from a mobile phone. Anonymous information can also be submitted to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or online at www.p3tips.com/250.
