Social Justice Book Club on ‘Poverty, by America,’ Sept. 17

Join the Arrupe Center and the Burke Scholars as they kick off the Social Justice Book Club with "Poverty, by America" by Matthew Desmond. The kickoff event is Tuesday, Sept. 17, at 6:30 p.m. in AMU 227.

The first 40 students to register will receive a free copy of the book.

Come learn about:

• New ways to think about a morally urgent issue
• Imagining solutions to poverty
• What it means to be a "poverty abolitionist"
• How we collectively belong to each other

A New York Times bestseller, "Poverty, by America" illustrates how poverty injures the impoverished - physically, financially, and spiritually - and how the wealthiest country in the world has developed a bifurcated system that favors those who are better off (in the form of tax breaks, hoarded benefits, and walled-off communities). With so many resources available, Desmond argues that poverty could be abolished fairly easily in the U.S. There's just one hitch: those whom the system favors must be willing to give up some of their advantages.
