Safety is a top priority for the Oklahoma State University Police Department.
OSUPD provides a variety of self-defense classes and training such as R.A.D (Rape Aggression Defense System), Alcohol and Drug Awareness and Active Shooter Response to give students, faculty and staff tools to promote their safety.
OSUPD Lt. Leah Storm and other instructors conduct self-defense and situational awareness presentations to teach students ways to recognize potential threats and how to respond confidently to dangerous situations.
Storm recently did a situational awareness presentation with the women of Alpha Delta Pi to show a few self-defense tactics, teach the importance of personal safety and answer any questions.
"Scary things really do happen. Lt. Storm graciously visited our chapter and taught us many valuable life lessons as to how to be better equipped in these scary situations," said Kelley Easton, an Alpha Delta Pi member. "Some things will always be out of our control but with her help, our sisters have a better grasp of awareness and defense mechanisms and feel more confident in their ability to defend themselves if a situation arises.
"Lt. Storm demonstrated various maneuvers, discussed situational awareness and added a humorous element to her teachings, which kept our chapter engaged and encouraged our sisters to have fun while learning."
Storm said Alpha Delta Pi were among the few that submitted great questions they wanted the presentation to incorporate along with general information.
"They wanted to also have an interactive portion and learn a few techniques to show to their participants that they 'can do hard things' while I was also able to prove to them that personal safety learning can also be fun while covering taboo or hard topics," Storm said.
OSUPD hopes to instill these essential safety tactics so students know what to do if potentially faced with a dangerous situation. To request a self-defense class, training or presentation, visit the Department of Public Safety website.
