Hoyer Statement on Supreme Court Decision on Emergency Abortion Care

WASHINGTON, DC - Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05) released the following statement today on the Supreme Court decision in Idaho and Moyle, et al. v. United States:

"Today, the Supreme Court had an opportunity to make it definitively clear that Americans can access emergency care - including abortion services - when their health is in immediate danger. It had a chance to provide clarity and to reduce chaos; to affirm that pregnant patients are protected by federal law and that providers can do their lifesaving jobs without fear. The Supreme Court did not take it. Instead, the Court's majority opinion left the door open for further challenges to this basic right.

"In the twenty-first century, we should not have to debate whether Americans facing a health emergency can access the care they need. Nor should their freedom to access contraception and IVF and to make other reproductive care decisions be called into question. Regrettably, the Republican-appointed majority on the Supreme Court did just that with its extremist decision to overturn Roe v. Wade two years ago.

"Since then, extreme Republicans at every level of government have fought to restrict women's reproductive freedom at every turn. They will not stop unless we make them by reestablishing the Roe precedent and codifying it in federal law. Democrats will never yield in that mission to ensure women can exercise their constitutional right to make their own health decisions."
