70 375 asylum applications in June 2024

In June 2024, 70 375 first-time asylum applicants (non-EU citizens) applied for international protection in EU countries, a 17% decrease compared with June 2023 (84 730).

There were also 6 540 subsequent applicants, representing a 6% increase compared with June 2023 (6 185).

Syrians, Venezuelans and Afghans remain the largest groups of asylum seekers

In June 2024, Syrians remained the largest group of people seeking asylum (10 165 first-time applicants). They were followed by Venezuelans (6 340) and Afghans (5 930).

Germany, Spain, Italy and France accounted for 76% of first-time applicants

Germany (16 770), Spain (14 855), Italy (11 685) and France (10 510) continued to receive the highest number of first-time asylum applicants in June 2024, accounting for 76% of all first-time applicants in the EU.

In June 2024, the EU total of first-time asylum applicants was 15.7 per hundred thousand people.

Compared with the population of each EU country (on 1 January 2024), the highest rates of first-time applicants were recorded in Greece (45.4), followed by Spain (30.6) and Ireland (26.2).

2 395 unaccompanied minors applying for asylum

In June 2024, 2 395 unaccompanied minors applied for asylum for the first time in the EU, with most of them coming from Syria (675), Afghanistan (405) and Egypt (255).

The EU country that received the highest number of asylum applications from unaccompanied minors was Germany (725), ahead of Bulgaria (300), Greece (290), the Netherlands (260) and Spain (255).
