City Council will hear request on speeding violations

July 8, 2024 - The Hampton City Council will hold its regular work and legislative sessions on Wednesday, with agendas that include a briefing on crime statistics and a request to impose an additional $200 fine on motorists cited for speeding in a specific residential corridor in Wythe.

The council will hold its work session at 1 p.m., and its legislative session at 6:30, both in chambers on the eighth floor of City Hall, 22 Lincoln St. The meetings are open to the public. They are also broadcast on the city's TV channel (Cox 47, Verizon 22) and streamed live at hampton.gov/livetv.

After a Public Works traffic study showed many motorists speeding near the intersection of Shell Road and Greenbriar Avenue, a four-way stop was put in place, with clear signs warning of a new traffic pattern. Residents have said the stop sign has not eliminated the dangerous driving in their neighborhood, and this week Public Works will request an ordinance imposing an additional $200 fine on top of any speeding tickets in that corridor. If it is approved by City Council on Wednesday, the ordinance will go into effect immediately.

The legislative session will also include a public hearing on a block grant and a partnership program that could be added to the Fiscal Year 2025 budget.

The afternoon work session will include a police briefing on crime data comparisons and police division resources. There will also be an update on the city's preparations for the impending Atlantic hurricane season.

Both meetings will include consideration of appointments to several local boards and commissions.
