Public Consultation on a draft Critical Minerals List for New Zealand

Public Consultation on a draft Critical Minerals List for New Zealand

Publish date: 16 September 2024

The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) is developing a critical minerals list, to identify New Zealand's mineral potential, and to help catalogue the domestic and imported minerals that are vital to New Zealand's economy, national security, and technology needs.

This list was identified as a key deliverable in the draft Minerals Strategy for New Zealand which was consulted on from 23 May to 31 July 2024.

Minerals are essential to our everyday lives and are a key ingredient of the technology needed for the transition to clean energy. Minerals also play a major role in New Zealand's export-led economic recovery.

The critical minerals list will allow the government to:

  • assess what minerals are in demand internationally, so that New Zealand can benefit from economic opportunities
  • evaluate how New Zealand minerals could contribute to the diversification of global mineral supply chains
  • manage New Zealand's susceptibility to supply disruptions domestically by regulatory factors, and internationally from supply chain disruptions caused by geopolitical risks and external market forces.

We need your feedback on the content of the draft list.

We welcome all submissions but are particularly interested in the following questions:

  1. Have we missed the inclusion of any mineral(s) on the draft critical minerals list? If so, why.
  2. Have we included any mineral(s) that you think should not be on the list? If so, why.

The public consultation is now open.

Submissions close at 5pm, Thursday, 10 October.

You can provide feedback via the Ministry of Business, Innovation & Employment's (MBIE) website at:
