Insurance Authority warns against suspicious Facebook accounts and fraudulent websites

The Insurance Authority (IA) today (22 July 2024) wishes to alert members of the public to Facebook accounts operating under the name "Congratulation Winner" and fraudulent websites with the domain names of "https[:]//hsbc[.]myfreesites[.]net", "https[:]//hsbc1[.]myfreesites[.]net" and "https[:]//twisted-canvas-tattoo34[.]myfreesites[.]net". The aforesaid Facebook accounts have been sending out fabricated winning notifications to campaign participants and asking them to visit the fraudulent websites that purport to be the official websites of a licensed insurance agency of Hong Kong, The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited (HSBC), with the intention of deceitfully obtaining sensitive personal information. HSBC has confirmed that it has no connection with the aforesaid Facebook accounts and the fraudulent websites.

The case has been reported to the Hong Kong Police Force for further investigation. Anyone who has provided personal information through the aforesaid links should call HSBC at (852) 2233-3000, and report the case to the Hong Kong Police Force.
