Student life plays a crucial role in the overall experience at the University of Michigan-Flint. The Division of Student Affairs fosters a caring, inclusive and welcoming environment, offering more than 125 student clubs and organizations, recreational activities, counseling services and support for veterans and students with disabilities.

At UM-Flint, students can engage in various activities, including joining or creating clubs and organizations, participating in leadership development, volunteering in service opportunities on campus and in the community, and enjoying sports and recreational activities.

DSA is dedicated to supporting students through five core values:

The Office of the Dean of Students is dedicated to enhancing student life by providing valuable resources and support. This office focuses on student involvement, well-being and leadership. It offers various services, including emergency and crisis assistance, Wolverine Essentials, and a behavior intervention team designed to promote a positive campus environment.

ODOS oversees student activities, Fraternity and Sorority Life, leadership programs and major events. This includes support for Student Government, Black Student Union, Campus Activities Board, Qua Literary Magazine and all registered student organizations. Annual events include the Mgagement Fair, Maize and Blue Days and Celebrating Wolverine Excellence and the annual student leadership awards ceremony.

The team collaborates with faculty, staff and students to address community matters constructively and supportively. Additionally, the associate vice chancellor oversees Housing & Residential Life and Conferences & Events, ensuring students can access enriching experiences that foster personal growth and community connection.

Conferences and Events help students create memorable and successful on-campus programming. The staff is dedicated to supporting students, faculty and staff by assisting with everything from reserving the perfect venue to planning and coordinating an the details of an event.

Students can take advantage of this support by reaching out to the CAE team when they want to host a gathering, whether it's a club meeting, a workshop or a larger community event. The staff is knowledgeable about the various spaces available on campus and can help ensure that everything runs smoothly.

Student Health & Wellness creates an environment that supports all students' health and well-being. Students can access departments and staff members who provide academic, health and extra-curricular support and guidance.

Counseling and Psychological Services - CAPS

Counseling and Psychological Services offers all enrolled students free, confidential counseling services, resources and referrals. With virtual and in-person appointments available, students can easily access support tailored to their needs. In addition to individual counseling, CAPS provides a variety of workshops and support groups focused on mental health and well-being. These programs cover important topics such as stress management, healthy relationships and coping strategies. Students are encouraged to explore these resources and participate in group sessions to connect with peers and gain valuable insights.

Disability and Accessibility Support Services - DASS

Disability Accommodations and Support Services is dedicated to creating an inclusive environment for all students. DASS provides individualized accommodations based on each student's needs, such as extended test time and note-taking assistance. The office advocates for the effective implementation of these accommodations and collaborates with faculty and staff to enhance physical accessibility across campus. Additionally, DASS works to improve digital accessibility on the university website and learning management system. By empowering students and offering ongoing support, DASS ensures that all students can thrive academically.

Recreational Services - REC

Recreational Services manages the Recreation Center and offers a variety of programs, including fitness classes, intramural sports and club sports. Conveniently located next to the University Center, the facility features three levels equipped with weight and cardio areas, multi-purpose gym courts, racquetball courts, a suspended indoor track and a 25-yard pool.

Current students enjoy free access to the Rec Center, including complimentary drop-in fitness classes and intramural sports leagues. Recreational Services also provides a range of programs focused on health and well-being, helping students stay active and engaged. Whether you're looking to join a team, take a fitness class or simply enjoy the facilities, there's something for everyone at the Recreation Center.

Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion - ODEI

The Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion's central office oversees the universitywide DEI Strategic Action Plan and is the central coordinating unit to support DEI efforts across UM-Flint. Within DSA, the following units fall under ODEI: Center for Gender & Sexuality, Intercultural Center, and Office of Educational Opportunity Initiatives, with the chief diversity officer serving as director of the latter two units.

Intercultural Center - ICC

The Intercultural Center was founded in 2014 as a direct response to the needs expressed by cultural student organizations. These groups highlighted the importance of having a dedicated space to support their work, center marginalized identities (particularly people of color), and facilitate critical dialogues on pressing social issues.

Located in the UCEN, the ICC offers a reservable space for student organizations to hold meetings and events. This physical space serves as a hub for cross-cultural interaction and community building.

While the ICC focuses on supporting marginalized identities, it welcomes everyone. All university community members are encouraged to engage with the center's resources and participate in its programs, fostering a more inclusive and equitable campus environment for all.

Center for Gender & Sexuality - CGS

The Center for Gender & Sexuality is a vibrant hub that celebrates diversity and fosters inclusivity. It's a welcoming space for all students, especially those who identify as women, LGBTQIA+, or survivors of sexual violence. The Center offers a range of engaging programs and services designed to educate, support, and empower the campus community.

At CGS, you'll find a cozy space to relax, study or meet friends, peer educators who offer guidance on topics like consent, healthy relationships and gender identity, weekly events such as Women Talk Wednesday and Queer Thursday, and opportunities to get involved in activism and social justice initiatives.

The Center also provides:

Student Veterans Resource Center - SVRC

The Student Veterans Resource Center supports the veteran community. Services include assisting with activating GI Bill benefits, providing support during the admissions process and offering resources and referrals to veteran-specific services in the community. Annual events include the Veterans' Graduation Ceremony, the Veterans Day Ceremony and meet-and-greet events every fall and winter semester. The Student Veterans Lounge allows students to study and interact with each other.
