Durham Region celebrates Canada Day

Whitby, Ontario - The following statement is being issued on behalf of John Henry, Regional Chair and Chief Executive Officer for The Regional Municipality of Durham:

"On Monday (July 1), people across the country will recognize Canada Day-a celebration of the heritage, shared values and diversity that make Canada a wonderful place to call home.

This day is an opportunity for all Canadians to come together and celebrate what makes us proud. Canada's cultural identity is shaped by respect and inclusivity and the existence of vibrant and welcoming communities such as those found right here in Durham.

While we celebrate Canada Day, we must acknowledge past inequities and reflect on the territory we reside on. Indigenous Peoples are the stewards of these lands and waters. We must continue to work toward reconciliation and ensure equal opportunities for all.

However you are celebrating, I wish you a safe and happy Canada Day."
