Hackney paid tribute to the brave service people in the British Armed Forces community with a ceremony on Armed Forces Day on Saturday (29 June).

Representatives from units and cadets in Hackney including members of Hackney's Salvation Army, 3 Military Intelligence Battalion, London Cadets, RAF Air Cadets, Sea Cadets and the Hackney Memorable Order of Tin Hats, assembled in Hackney Town Hall to hear the playing of Reveille by a lone trumpeter, and witness the traditional flag raising ceremony.

The gathered troops heard addresses from Speaker of Hackney, Cllr Sheila Suso-Runge, and Stephen Howlett CBE DL, Deputy Lieutenant for the London Borough of Hackney, before certificates were presented to troops and cadets in recognition of their exceptional service.

Armed Forces Day takes place every year on the last Saturday in June to acknowledge the dedication and efforts of those who serve in the Armed Forces.

"

Armed Forces Day is a day for us to honour the brave and committed service people in the British Armed Forces community. Here in Hackney we are proud to raise the Armed Forces Day flag high above our Town Hall to mark this occasion, and to show our wholehearted support to all British Armed Forces troops and their families.

Cllr Sheila Suso-Runge, Speaker of Hackney

Today we pay tribute to those in the Armed Forces serving this country and our community. It is right that we recognise the sacrifices they make, many placing themselves in danger around the world. Today is our opportunity as a community to acknowledge their service and to celebrate all that is good about our Military and its commitment to the people of this country - that is what Armed Forces Day allows and encourages us to do.

Stephen Howlett CBE, Deputy Lieutenant for the London Borough of Hackney
