CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Fla. (Sept. 30, 2024) - If you are concerned the flooding from Hurricane Helene may have contaminated your private well, you can test your water for free while supplies last. Follow these steps:
  1. Pick up a kit from the Department of Health in Charlotte County Environmental Health office, 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m., 1100 Loveland Blvd., Port Charlotte.
  2. Follow the directions on the kit's instruction sheet.
  3. Take the water sample to the Benchmark Private Well Testing Laboratory, 1001 Corporate Ave., Suite 102, North Port.
  4. Results will come from the lab.

This is for private wells only. If you receive potable water from a public utility, there is no need to test your water, as it is already tested by the utility. Due to Hurricane Helene, the well testing is being provided at no cost for a limited time only.
