FDNY releases new PSA for 99th National Fire Prevention Week

The New York City Fire Department kicked off the 99th National Fire Prevention Week with a Public Service Announcement (PSA), reminding all New Yorkers that smoke alarms save lives.

This year's FDNY PSA is "Sound of Survival."

"Working with the FDNY Foundation for more than a decade, I saw firsthand how the Department's public outreach efforts make a difference, in particular when it came to increasing awareness of the critical role smoke and carbon monoxide alarms play in keeping New Yorkers safe," Fire Commissioner Robert S. Tucker said.

A person's chance of dying in a fire is reduced by nearly half if they have a working smoke alarm in their home.

"Time and again, we see people who survive fires when functioning alarms are present. It's so important that families install them, test them regularly, and replace them at least every 10 years," Chief of Department John Esposito said.

National Fire Prevention Week is observed in New York City and the U.S. annually during the week of Oct. 9. National Fire Prevention Week was established in 1925.
