Grand Junction Announces League of American Bicyclists Instructor Seminar

The City of Grand Junction will host a three-day League of American Bicyclists Cycling Instructor (LCI) seminar beginning on Friday, Nov. 8 - Sunday, Nov. 10, 2024 at Lincoln Park Barn, 510 N. 12th St. There is a mandatory prerequisite course, "Smart Cycling," that will be hosted on Sunday, Sept. 22, 2024, beginning at 8 a.m. at Lincoln Park's Hospitality Suite.

The cost of the seminar is $500, and participants must be members of the League of American Bicyclists (individual membership is $50). Interested participants may qualify for a full or partial scholarship from the city (up to $500 value). The seminar will be hosted by an LCI coach beginning on the evening of Friday, Nov. 8, and ending Sunday afternoon, Nov. 10, 2024, with an exam. The seminar includes in-classroom and on-bike training. Meals will be provided each day.

Register online for the prerequisite course online before Sept. 18. LCI registration will be available upon completion of the Smart Cycling training. The Smart Cycling prerequisite course includes a four-hour classroom learning portion and a five-hour on-bike session. The classroom portion can also be taken ahead of time online. Lunch will be provided to those attending both the morning and afternoon portions in person. The course will be provided free of charge to those planning to participate in the seminar.

Those who become LCI certified will be listed in a national database of bicycle educators and will have the tools and expertise to teach a variety of League Smart Cycling curriculum courses to increase safe riding skills for the community. In addition, LCIs will be eligible to be covered under the League's general liability insurance while teaching, relieving burdens on parent organizations. The LCI seminar will also provide the opportunity for those involved in teaching bike safety to connect with each other and learn from one another how to be better educators and motivate more community members to cycle.

The city is facilitating the LCI seminar and funding scholarships in efforts to provide additional training to those involved in teaching bicycle safety to people of all ages at various levels of experience. This program aligns with strategies adopted in the 2023 Grand Junction Pedestrian and Bicycle Plan and provides students and the community with the skills to walk and bicycle safely, educating them about the benefits of walking and bicycling, and teaching them about the broad range of transportation choices.
