Foreign Ministry promotes relationship with U.S. based on full respect for sovereignty and national interests
  • Given the complexity of the bilateral agenda, the relationship with the U.S. should be based on a clear understanding and respect, said Foreign Secretary Juan Ramón de la Fuente.

Foreign Secretary Juan Ramón de la Fuente announced that, at the instruction of President Claudia Sheinbaum, he has discussed with U.S. Ambassador to Mexico Ken Salazar the principles for systematic channels to facilitate bilateral relations, based on full respect for sovereignty and national interests.

Given the complex bilateral agenda, the Foreign Secretary emphasized the importance of maintaining a clear and well-structured approach to advancing the various bilateral issues.

"Clear rules make lasting friendships, and I believe that has been the fundamental message. I must say that Ambassador Salazar has embraced this with exemplary professionalism. This is how relations between countries work in practice, through ambassadors and their respective foreign ministries," he said.

Secretary De la Fuente noted that this new approach to communications with Ambassador Salazar has already yielded positive results in these early weeks of the administration.

"President Sheinbaum has directed me to continue advancing in the most effective way, while upholding our core principles-principles that are non-negotiable in any bilateral or multilateral relationship: full respect for our sovereignty and national interests. With this foundation in place, I am confident our relationship will continue to be cordial, productive, and wide-ranging" he said.

Foreign Secretary De la Fuente affirmed that ongoing dialogue will continue to make possible constructive engagement that benefits the bilateral relationship.
