Hospital team supported education, awareness through statewide challenge

Bristol, PA (October 18, 2024) -Lower Bucks Hospital has been honored with a prestigious statewide accolade for its exceptional initiatives in promoting organ, eye, and tissue donation awareness.

The hospital has achieved platinum status in The Hospital and Healthsystem Association of Pennsylvania's (HAP) 2024 Donate Life Pennsylvania Hospital Challenge.

This annual event encourages hospitals across Pennsylvania to enhance awareness regarding organ, eye, and tissue donation in their facilities and local communities. HAP collaborated with the Pennsylvania Department of Health and two organ procurement organizations-the Center for Organ Recovery & Education and the Gift of Life Donor Program-to launch this initiative.

Lower Bucks Hospital is truly honored to be recognized in HAP's Donate Life Pennsylvania Hospital Challenge. "This distinguished award highlights our steadfast commitment to educating and empowering the communities we serve about the essential and life-saving importance of organ donation," remarked Michael Motte, CEO of Lower Bucks Hospital.

Kicking off in April to coincide with National Donate Life Month, the HAP challenge engaged Lower Bucks Hospital in a variety of activities involving staff, patients, and local community members, including educational pop-up events and a flag-raising ceremony. The hospital's efforts were closely monitored and assessed, with designations ranging from titanium to platinum, gold, silver, or bronze based on performance metrics submitted to HAP.

In addition to its platinum designation, Lower Bucks Hospital received accolades from the Hospital Association of Pennsylvania for its significant role in raising awareness for the Gift of Life Donor Program. During the awards ceremony, Denise Cirio, Hospital Services Coordinator, emphasized the regional impact, noting that in 2023, there were 12 transplant centers, 35 programs, a population of 11.3 million, and 693 organ donors, leading to 1,734 organ transplants and 2,665 tissue donations, which included 1,433 musculoskeletal donations and 2,278 cornea donations. Over 61,000 organs were coordinated for transplantation, in addition to more than 2 million tissue allografts. The hospital further promoted donor awareness through educational displays and community events. The platinum level is the second highest recognition a hospital can attain.

HAP President and CEO Nicole Stallings remarked, "We applaud the hospitals throughout Pennsylvania and our partners for their remarkable commitment to enhancing organ donation awareness. The impressive participation in this challenge highlights the dedication and enthusiasm of hospital teams in improving the health of their communities. Increasing the number of organ, eye, and tissue donors is crucial for hospital teams to save and improve lives."

Lower Bucks Hospital was among 118 hospitals across the state that took part in this year's challenge.
