Dear students,
Dr. Chris NaviaWith Halloween weekend coming up, I want to share some reminders to help you have fun while remaining responsible.
Halloween-themed events are occurring across campus, including Halloween trivia at the Union Sports Annex on Thursday at 9 p.m. and a screening of "Hocus Pocus" with interactive trivia and prizes at the Varsity Theatre on Friday at 8 p.m. There are also a pair of soccer games at Valley Fields this weekend: the men's team hosts Akron Saturday at 7 p.m., while the women's team takes on Xavier on Sunday at 1 p.m.
As you take part in festivities, please be considerate of your well-being and of others. Remember that underage drinking and abuse or high-risk use of alcohol and other drugs is counter to Marquette's values of respect for self, others, property and authority, and often disrupts our ability to treat one another with dignity and respect.
Be mindful of making choices that protect our community's sense of safety and security, especially for those who choose to abstain.
Be mindful of how your costume might affect others. If you plan to dress up, think about how you're representing yourself and whether your costume is representative of our culture of inclusion. Remember to also be practical - avoid costumes that make it difficult to see, move or walk.
Ensure you're aware of your surroundings. Obey traffic signals and only cross when the pedestrian light indicates a walk sign. Remain cognizant of vehicles, and don't assume they will stop. Make eye contact with drivers, don't just look at the vehicle.
Know that Marquette is vigilant about doing everything possible to keep you safe.
Take advantage of resources.
Look out for one another.
I hope you take these messages seriously and use your best judgment to have a safe and fun Halloween.
Sincerely,
Dr. Chris Navia
