SCREEN MIRAI Laboratory Established at Osaka University Graduate School of Engineering

July 19, 2024Doc. No.: NR240719E

Kyoto, Japan - July 19, 2024 - SCREEN Holdings Co., Ltd. and the Osaka University Graduate School of Engineering established the SCREEN MIRAI Laboratory on July 1, 2024. The creation of the institute is intended to reinforce R&D related to semiconductors and new fields over the long term and collaboratively foster innovation that will contribute to business growth.

With the advance of digital transformation (DX), green transformation (GX), and such new technological fields as generative AI, efforts to realize smaller and more complex semiconductor devices have been accelerating. Developing increasingly sophisticated semiconductor processes requires the explanation of nanoscale physical phenomena as well as technologies to control them.

Until now, SCREEN and Osaka University have collaborated on R&D on specific fundamental technology topics across a wide range of fields, such as life science and manufacturing technologies related to making semiconductors smaller and more complex. With the establishment of the collaborative research institute at Osaka University (in Suita, Osaka), they aim to further strengthen their collaboration. Both deepening collaboration on existing research and promoting further coordination and development over the long term, the institute will combine simulation and experimental approaches to advance the development of cutting-edge processes. The institute will also pursue new R&D themes. By aligning research at Osaka University with SCREEN's business strategies, the institute aims to realize new technologies and their real-world application. In addition, the institute will help develop young researchers with high levels of expertise to further bolster collaboration between academia and industry.

Osaka University

Osaka University was established in 1931 as one of Japan's imperial universities at the behest of Osaka's political and business communities and other residents. The university traces its spiritual origins to the Kaitokudo and Tekijuku schools established in Osaka in 18th and 19th centuries. Today, with 11 undergraduate schools, 16 graduate schools, and six research institutes spanning the humanities, sciences, and medicine, it is one of Japan's leading comprehensive research universities. Looking toward the centennial of its founding in 2031, under the motto "Live Locally, Grow Globally," Osaka University seeks to help move the world forward as one of its most innovative universities.
