Hospital da Luz Setúbal marks the World Cancer Day

Lectures, physical activity and testimonies: on the 1st February, to better face cancer.

Hospital da Luz Setúbal will organize, on the 1st February, a special session open to the general public, together with a series of activities destined to patients and their families. The initiative intends to mark the World Cancer Day, celebrated on February 4, and will count with the participation of patients, who will offer their testimony about how they face the disease.

The program includes:

  • A relaxation session (at Day Hospital);
  • An educational session on health: easy and safe physical activity;
  • Presentation of the book "Vou fazer quimioterapia! E agora?" (I am to do chemotherapy! Now what?), by nurse Patrícia Matos Martins;
  • Testimonies of patients.

Cancer is presently a common disease among the general population and it is estimated that, in the West, one in three individuals will suffer from cancer throughout life. All over the world, 9.6 million people die annually of cancer, but many of those deaths could be avoidable with more programs of early detection, prevention and treatment.

To sensitize the world population and mobilize it in the fight against cancer is the goal of the World Cancer Day, established on the 4th February 2000 and celebrated every year by the initiative of the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC), which aggregates over a thousand associations and entities from all over the world that work and have responsibilities in the area. For the triennium 2022-2024, the motto "For Fairer Care" was created, to mobilize efforts and potentiate action.

We all have a role to play in this fight, across all sectors. And patients, in particular, need our best support.
