3 qualities to look for in a workers compensation insurance provider

Accidents happen, even at the most safety-oriented company. Between employee shortages, supply chain challenges and the distractions of life in general, quality issues can easily become a real concern - and so can on-the-job injuries.

While it might not be possible to relieve all the worries of running a business, it is possible to be prepared for accidents to happen. And that's where workers compensation insurance comes in.

As a workers compensation professional who's been in the industry more than 35 years, I can tell you it's important to find the right fit when it comes to coverage aimed at taking care of lives and livelihoods. But how do you find that fit with a lot of workers comp carrier options in the market?

Here are three qualities to look for in a workers compensation insurance provider.

1. They offer convenient services.

Coping with an injury can be a stressful, worrisome time. What services does the carrier offer with the workers comp policy to make that difficult time easier for the insurance agent, the employer and - most important - the employee?

For example, are nurse triage services available to help an injured person find care faster? Can the carrier also handle commercial insurance needs, such as property or liability coverages, making it easier to keep tabs on bills? Do they have pay-as-you-go options to help reduce strain on a company's cash flow?

With many workers comp insurance choices out there, thinking in terms of the convenient services that matter most may help you find the right fit.

2. They have claims advocates for guidance.

Some workers compensation claims can be quite complex depending on the situation. For an insurance agent who's helping their policyholder through these moments, having one point of contact to answer questions is often a big help.

You may want to consider a workers comp carrier that has a claims advocate - a partner through the claims process - who's available for support and guidance in those complicated scenarios.

3. They care about the people behind the policy.

When a workers comp claim is filed it usually means a person is struggling to some degree, and that's a huge deal. Finding an insurance provider who is compassionately aware of this may be one of the most important qualities to ponder.

It might help to seek carriers who embrace a whole-person approach to claims. This means they'll likely understand fears, lead with empathy and intentionally strive to make the claims experience as easy as possible for the person behind the claim.

And this care can extend to agents, too. Does the carrier value personal relationships? Do they demonstrate appreciation for trusting them with your customers' work comp needs? These could be useful questions to think about.
