Nursing education today faces significant challenges. As healthcare grows increasingly complex, the need to balance technical expertise with compassionate care becomes more critical than ever. Southwestern Adventist University's Nursing Program has taken this challenge head-on, implementing strategies that not only address these issues but also elevate the quality and success of our program.

According to Dr. Terri Gibson, a Nursing faculty member at SWAU, one of the main challenges is helping students develop the critical thinking skills necessary to provide quality care. "Many students juggle family, work, and other commitments while studying to become the nurses they aspire to be," Dr. Gibson notes. Additionally, the healthcare staff who mentor our students are often stretched thin, making it challenging to dedicate time to teaching. The need for more nurses at the bedside and in educational roles is a pressing issue, making nursing an incredibly rewarding career choice with abundant opportunities.

To overcome these challenges, SWAU utilizes a comprehensive approach that integrates state-of-the-art resources and strong partnerships with healthcare organizations. "We work closely with clinical sites in the DFW area, where our students are not only welcomed but celebrated for their dedication and skill," Dr. Gibson explains. Our partnerships, combined with our advanced facilities-including skills labs, simulation centers, and virtual reality tools-ensure that our students are well-prepared for real-world patient care.

What truly sets SWAU's Nursing Program apart is our commitment to student success. Dr. Gibson highlights the program's individualized support system: "We've developed a Success program that offers personalized coaching and additional resources, supported by grant funding. Our program retention rate remains in the 90s, a clear indicator of our focus on student achievement." This commitment is reflected in our NCLEX pass rate, which currently stands at an impressive 94%.

Moreover, SWAU's Nursing Program is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), a testament to our adherence to the highest standards of nursing education. "In May 2024, we received full accreditation for the next 10 years, following a thorough review that commended our program, students, and faculty for their accomplishments," Dr. Gibson proudly shares.

As we continue these efforts, the future of SWAU's Nursing Program looks promising. Our graduates are not only well-prepared to provide expert care but are also equipped to lead with compassion and faith. "The world will benefit from the care our students provide, guided by expertise, kindness, and a commitment to service," says Dr. Gibson. With our unwavering dedication to quality education and student support, we are excited to shape the future of nursing, one graduate at a time.
