SUBJ/INDEPENDENCE DAY MESSAGE 2024//
GENTEXT/REMARKS/1. Two hundred and forty-eight years ago, the
founders of our country made a powerful stand for freedom that
captured the attention of the world and has echoed through the
annals of history. On 4 July 1776, the Second Continental Congress
officially approved the final version of the Declaration of
Independence - a document 56 courageous patriots risked their own
lives to sign, and ideals that generations of warriors have fought
valiantly to preserve. Today, we continue the tradition of
celebrating that document's call for extending freedom to all
people, and we remember all who have gone into harm's way for the
cause of liberty.
2. For Marines, Independence Day is the perfect opportunity to
demonstrate our pride in service and reignite our commitment to
country and Corps. We know maintaining freedom comes at a steep
price and there are always adversaries threatening to attack and
undermine our way of life. It is our duty and privilege to stand
ready to defend liberty whenever and wherever our Nation calls.
3. To our Nation, know that your Marines have the watch. We remain
capable and vigilant - prepared to carry on the legacy of America's
expeditionary force-in-readiness. Marines readily take on the
mission of ensuring that the vision for liberty and equality issued
on 4 July 1776 is realized for all people.
4. To all Marines, Sailors, and families, I wish you a happy 4th of
July. I hope this holiday will offer each of you an opportunity to
gather safely with family and friends. Make wise choices, look out
for each other, and make sure everyone safely returns ready to work.
5. Semper Fidelis. Eric M. Smith, General, U.S. Marine Corps,
Commandant of the Marine Corps.//
