(Houston, TX)- Today, Congressman Al Green and Commissioner Rodney Ellis and other elected officials will hold a press conference to discuss the United States Department of Justice's decision to monitor polling locations in Harris and other Texas counties. This decision follows a communique sent to Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke, calling for protection of Texan's voting rights. It was signed by more than 60 Texas officials.
The letter highlights the alarming purge of over 1.1 million individuals from Texas' voter rolls in the 90 days before a federal election, conducted under the National Voter Registration Act. It also raises concerns related to possible efforts by the Texas Attorney General's office to intimidate a candidate for public office as well as threaten and discourage voter registration activists.
Congressman Al Green stated, "We must assiduously protect the voting rights of all Texans and uphold our democratic process. The monitoring by the U.S. Department of Justice Civil Rights Division is a needed step towards ensuring transparency and accountability in our elections. By observing polling locations, we can safeguard against any attempts to suppress the vote or intimidate voters."
