IsDB Institute Explores Ways to Support Thailand's Awqaf Sector

The Islamic Development Bank Institute (IsDBI) successfully completed a mission to Thailand, aimed at identifying opportunities to support the country's Awqaf sector (Islamic endowments).

The initiative, prompted by a request from the Islamic Economy and Finance Centre of the Prince of Songkla University (PSU), underscores IsDBI's leadership in the advancement of Islamic finance.

During the mission from 22-28 June 2024, the IsDBI team, comprising Dr. Abozer Mohamed and Mr. Aboubacar Salihou Kante, engaged with a diverse group of stakeholders, including government officials, universities, and financial institutions. The discussions focused on developing a project to support the Awqaf industry in the country.

The IsDBI team also held high-profile bilateral meetings with H.E. Wan Muhammad Noor Matha, the Speaker of the House of Representatives of Thailand, H.E. Ms. Pateemoh Sadeeyamu, Governor of the Pattani Province, and Dr. Worawit Baru, a member of the House of Representatives for Pattani.

The mission highlighted the existing strong relationship between IsDBI and Thailand. The Speaker of the Thai Parliament acknowledged IsDB's past contributions, including scholarships for Thai students and the construction of Islamic Studies Center and other related facilities at the University of Pattani.

This mission paves the way for potentially deeper cooperation between the IsDBI and Thailand, focusing on Islamic finance and social development initiatives.
