CUPD warns students of football ticket scams

September 4, 2024September 4, 2024

The Clemson University Police Department (CUPD) wants to warn the University community of ticket scams affecting students looking to purchase football tickets through social media platforms.

Officers have received reports of scammers using the Clemson Football Student Ticket GroupMe to offer football tickets for sale. The scammers ask the individual to send money via Apple Pay, Zelle or other payment apps and then delete their account after receiving the money.

How to avoid the scam

The best way to avoid these scams is to buy football tickets through authorized and trusted sources. Additionally:

  • Never send money for tickets over Apple Pay, Zelle or other payment apps.
  • Be especially cautious with interactions with newly joined members of a group.
  • Do not purchase tickets from someone you do not know. Only do business with individuals whose identity you can verify or whose credibility you can personally substantiate.

What to do if you have been scammed

  • If you believe you may have been a victim of this scam, contact CUPD at 864-656-2222.
  • If you become aware that you have been a victim of an impersonation scam, inform your colleagues, friends and any relevant contacts, that such communications are fraudulent.
  • To report fraudulent GroupMe postings or fraud on other social media platforms, follow the specific platform's guidelines for reporting impersonation.
