Rep. Cuellar Attended the Groundbreaking Ceremony of the Lafayette Tiny Homes Development

Today, Congressman Henry Cuellar, Ph.D. (TX-28) attended the groundbreaking ceremony of the Lafayette Tiny Homes Development with the City of Laredo.

This new development was made possible by $1.5 million in federal funding from HUD's HOME and HOME-American Rescue Plan (ARP) for the City of Laredo. HOME funds provided $974,210 and HOME ARP provided $528,275.

"Affordable housing is essential for improving the quality of life and reducing financial burdens for families in our community," said Dr. Cuellar. "It's critical that federal funding for projects like Lafayette homes continues to flow in. In Congress, I will continue to fight for more affordable housing in our community. I would like to thank the City of Laredo, Mayor Trevino, Council Member Alyssa Cigarroa, and Community Development Director Tina Martinez in working with me to deliver for our community."

The funds from these programs are meant to address affordable housing to benefit individuals and families who are homeless, at risk of homelessness, or vulnerable populations. Funds can be used for activities including development and support of affordable housing, tenant-based rental assistance, and provision and supportive services.

Lafayette Tiny Homes is a new, affordable housing development that includes 9 studio units for low-income households and qualifying populations. Energy efficient, the homes include amenities such as water, electricity, and air conditioning and are outfitted with appliances like refrigerators and stoves and a common laundry facility.

The space aims to foster community. The Tiny Homes Development provides a gathering area for tenants with two office spaces for on-site providers to ensure tenants have access to case management, financial counseling, and mental health support.
