We Hire Vets

The Texas Workforce Commission celebrated West Texas VA at the Texas Conference for Employers recently in Big Spring, Texas. The event was created to recognize distinguished employers who are dedicated to hiring Veterans. The recognition marks West Texas VA as an exemplary employer for Veterans in the state.

The "We Hire Vets" program, administered by the Texas Workforce Commission, acknowledges employers whose workforce comprises at least 10% Veterans. West Texas VA stands out significantly with Veterans making up approximately 38% of its workforce.

Joe Esparza, commissioner of the Texas Workforce Commission, presented the recognition certificate and a challenge coin to Keith Bass, executive director of West Texas VA.

In his address, Esparza praised the West Texas VA for its unwavering commitment to Veterans and thanked them for their support in making Texas one of the top choices for Veterans to make their home.

Veteran employment remains a crucial focus in Texas, which is home to one of the largest Veteran populations in the United States. According to recent statistics, Texas boasts over 1.4 million Veterans, many of whom face challenges in transitioning to civilian employment. Programs like "We Hire Vets" play a vital role in bridging this gap, ensuring that Veterans have access to meaningful and sustainable employment opportunities.

The recognition of West Texas VA highlights not just its commitment to employing Veterans but also its role in providing them with quality health care. The system's employment practices reflect its broader mission to serve Veterans with honor and dedication.

Executive Director Keith Bass expressed his gratitude for the recognition. "We are proud to be recognized as a leader in Veteran employment and remain committed to supporting our Veterans in every way possible. And we're grateful for the support of our community partners like the Texas Workforce Commission, Texas Veterans Commission and Veteran service organizations like the Disabled American Veterans," Bass said.

The West Texas VA Health Care System serves a vast region of 33 counties in West Texas and Southeast New Mexico. Based in Big Spring, the system includes George H. O'Brien Jr. VA and various community-based outpatient clinics.
