Media Statement: Police Committee Chairperson Condemns Mass Killings in the Eastern Cape

Parliament, Saturday, 28 September 2024 - The Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Police, Mr Ian Cameron, has condemned in the strongest terms the gruesome killing of 17 people in two shooting incidents in Lusikisiki in the Eastern Cape.

He said: "The South African Police Service must mobilise all necessary resources to ensure that the perpetrators of these heinous crimes are brought to book. Only effective prosecution can serve as an indication that as a society we do not accept any act of violence and murder," Mr Cameron said.

The mass killing is also worrying when a majority of those killed are women. The continuing killing of women in this country is beyond crisis levels and requires urgent, aggressive and innovative actionable plans to address.

The Chairperson has also called on community members to share information with the police to ensure the speedy arrest and prosecution of perpetrators. "Community collaboration is essential in the fight against crime and critical in stopping these murders," Mr Cameron concluded
