Close to Home: Ali Badavi, Signify Health Nurse Practitioner

During an IHE, clinicians identify chronic conditions, close gaps in care, and address social determinants of health, making it possible for health plan members to get connected to the right care for their unique needs.

Signify Health clinicians are asked a wide range of questions when they visit with health plan members in the home. Recently during an IHE visit, a member asked nurse practitioner Ali Badavi about an unusual spot on her skin. After looking at the spot, Ali encouraged the member to make an appointment with her doctor to have the spot thoroughly reviewed and analyzed in an office setting.

"Ali advised me to have a spot on my face looked at - it turned out to be carcinoma. He has my utmost gratitude and thanks for his early detection," the member relayed to the Signify Health team.

"At Signify Health, we have the time to help people and to truly listen to their questions and concerns," said Ali. "We can help guide them so they can take better care of themselves," he said. "We really can make a change in communities. After the IHE, members have better knowledge about their health."

Ali says questions vary from "Should I worry about this lesion on my arm?" to "What is heart failure?" He aims to provide answers that the health plan member understands and empower them to make changes to positively impact their health. For example, diet is also a common concern; he works to equip members to make better food choices.

"I encourage members to ask questions as I'm going through the assessment. I want them to be happy they saw me and be satisfied with the Signify Health IHE overall. I do my best to help people live healthier," he said.

That desire to make a difference is what led Ali to a career in health care. Prior to becoming an NP, he worked in customer service. He enjoyed helping people and believed health care would be a good fit for him.

In 2017, Ali completed his education to become a nurse practitioner. He found his way to Signify Health in 2019. Initially while working at Signify Health, he held other jobs as well, including roles in a hospital emergency department and a weight loss clinic. Over time, he transitioned to working exclusively for Signify Health.

"I love my work. Signify Health offers me flexibility in my schedule and the chance to spend more time with health plan members," he said.

Ali believes the In-Home Health Evaluation (IHE) offers immense value to members. A key component of that value is education and the ability to make urgent and non-urgent referrals.

Occasionally, Ali has encountered members with urgent needs, including a member who required urgent emergency department care for atrial fibrillation. Sometimes, those issues go beyond the physical. He recalls one member struggling with thoughts of suicide. He took appropriate action to ensure the member received the care needed.

"We try to help health plan members as best we can, and I think we're making a real difference," he said.

Ali lives in Cary, NC, with his wife and three children. He loves traveling and has visited every continent and many places in the U.S., including Yosemite, his favorite, and Hawaii. His family's next adventure will take them to Yellowstone.
