REP. RO KHANNA ANNOUNCES $2.9 MILLION IN FEDERAL FUNDING FOR THE MILPITAS SAFE ROUTES TO SCHOOL PROJECT

Milpitas, CA- Today, Representative Ro Khanna (CA-17) joined local leaders in announcing $2,900,000 in federal funding for the Milpitas Safe Routes to School project. The funds were secured as part of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law's Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) discretionary program, designed in part to improve roadway safety planning. The grant is focused on improving the city's school routes where 49% of bike and pedestrian crashes occur.

"With the funds from this grant, Milpitas will be able to make the infrastructure upgrades urgently needed to protect pedestrians and bicyclists. I was proud to vote for the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law in Congress that is investing in safer roads in our community and across the country. I also want to thank our local leaders for their commitment to making our roads safer for families, students, and everyone in our community," said Rep. Ro Khanna.

"We are thrilled to receive the federal grant under the Safe Streets and Roads for All program to help us create safer streets and improve mobility for everyone in our community. This funding allows us to invest in critical safety measures, reduce traffic fatalities, and build a transportation network that prioritizes the well-being of our residents," said Milpitas Mayor Carmen Montano.

"Our residents will benefit from the ability to walk or ride their bikes to school as a result of safer pathways that this grant will provide. The Milpitas Unified School District appreciates the leaders of the City of Milpitas for their efforts in building a Culture of We," said Milpitas Unified School District Superintendent Cheryl Jordan.

"Together, we are taking meaningful steps toward making our streets safer and more accessible, ultimately supporting our vision of a vibrant and connected community," said City Manager Ned Thomas.

The funding will be used for improvements that include speed feedback signs, safety lighting, raised medians and pedestrian refuge islands, ADA curb ramps and bulb-outs, pedestrian barricades, and signage. The grants are a direct result of Congress's vote to pass the Biden-Harris administration's Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.
