Battery Beware: Lithium Batteries

Lithium batteries are very common. They can be found in almost all portable electronic devices and in every room of your home, from the bathroom to the garage. See where lithium batteries might be in your house here.

Many people falsely assume they can recycle lithium batteries in their household recycling carts. But the hazardous materials used to make lithium batteries can start fires or even explode due to improper storage or disposal. Learn the dangers of lithium batteries and how to properly dispose of them.

Safely Dispose of Lithium Batteries:

  • PREVENT FIRES - Never toss lithium batteries or rechargeable devices in your household recycling or waste carts.
  • WHERE TO RECYCLE - Always dispose of lithium batteries at hazardous waste collection locations or with designated retailers.
  • PROPER DISPOSAL - Before disposing of lithium batteries, cover the battery terminals with electrical tape and/or place them in separate plastic bags.
