Kelly Ayotte Once Again Refuses to Support Proactive Protections for Abortion in New Hampshire

In her WMUR Conversation with the Candidate town hall, Kelly Ayotte once again refused to say she would sign legislation creating proactive protections for abortion rights in the Granite State as governor, her latest admission that she would not protect Granite Staters' reproductive freedom from the corner office.

WATCH HERE:

Not only has Ayotte refused to commit to codifying abortion rights into state law, she has repeatedly lied to voters about what the law entails, including on a previous appearance on WMUR's CloseUp. Ayotte claimed that abortion rights in New Hampshire have already been "enshrined in law." This is false, as New Hampshire is the only state in New England that has not codified abortion rights. Meanwhile, Democratic nominee for governor Joyce Craig has promised to codify abortion rights in New Hampshire's state law to ensure Granite Staters' most fundamental freedoms are protected.

This is Granite Staters' latest reason not to trust Ayotte with their reproductive rights. In the U.S. Senate, she voted for a national abortion ban and called for Roe v. Wade to be overturned. She voted to defund Planned Parenthood and vowed to continue defunding the organization as governor. Ayotte voted for the Blunt Amendment and the Respect for Rights of Conscience Act, both of which would have put access to birth control and IVF at risk. After losing her 2016 reelection campaign, Ayotte was hand-picked by the Trump administration to serve as the "sherpa" for then-Supreme Court Justice nominee Neil Gorsuch, who would go on to help overturn Roe v. Wade.

Despite this lengthy record, Ayotte has released ads trying to downplay her past positions on abortion in an attempt to trick Granite Staters into voting for her.

"Kelly Ayotte's comments confirm what we've known all along: she will not lift a finger to protect abortion rights, and women in New Hampshire cannot trust her with their most fundamental freedoms," said DGA States Press Secretary Emma O'Brien. "No matter how many lies she tells, Granite Staters know the truth: Kelly Ayotte voted for a national abortion ban, wants to defund Planned Parenthood, and helped secure the most anti-choice majority on the Supreme Court in modern history, and nothing she says now will change that."
