Reflecting on Justice and Prejudice: A Bold Reimagining of The Merchant of Venice in SFU's Black Box Theatre

Saint Francis University's recent production of The Merchant of Venice in the Resinski BlackBox Theatre has left audiences with much to ponder. Set in the intimate, high-tech space at the heart of the new Connors Family Fine Arts Center, this performance was more than just a play; it was an experience that challenged perspectives and sparked meaningful conversations.

The show, which ran from November 7-10, embraced Shakespeare's controversial work and cast a critical eye on themes of justice, prejudice, and societal biases. In this production, the character of Shylock, historically depicted as a villain, was reinterpreted as a tragic protagonist-a victim of societal oppression in a justice system that fails him. By setting the entire play within a courtroom, the production underscored the powerful dynamics of bias and exclusion that resonate today as much as they did in Shakespeare's era.

Partnering with the Community Arts Center of Cambria County and the Log Art Theatre, this production of The Merchant of Venice was also part of the broader Hope Springs Eternal: The Holocaust Project. This initiative brings together regional organizations to educate and inspire reflection on the Holocaust, using various art forms to deepen community awareness of the enduring impact of historical injustices.
