CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Fla. (Oct. 14, 2024) - While recovery efforts are underway following Hurricane Milton, the Charlotte County Community Development Department reminds residents that permits are required for most storm damage repairs in accordance with Section 105.1 of the Florida Building Code. Storm-related repairs are not exempt from permitting requirements.

Permit Requirements

If your home was flooded and more than 100 square feet of drywall was removed, a residential remodel permit is required.

Permits are essential to ensure that all repairs are done safely and meet the necessary building standards. Failure to obtain a permit may result in fines, additional repair costs, or issues when selling or insuring the property in the future.

For information on what requires a permit, visit www.CharlotteCountyFL.gov/permits.

Work That Does Not Require a Permit

Certain work may be done without a permit to help streamline the recovery process:

  • Removal of debris from inside or outside structures.
  • Minor demolition to prevent injury or further damage, including removal of flood-affected drywall.
  • Structural shoring and bracing.
  • Repair of minor water leaks not involving structural, mechanical, or electrical systems.
  • Re-installation of previously permitted fences in the same location, except pool enclosure fences, which must comply with safety requirements.

While certain activities can begin immediately, residents must ensure that all recovery efforts comply with the Florida Building Code and other applicable county codes.
