LAKELAND, Fla. (November 4, 2024) - Lakeland Electric is pleased to announce the approval of a contract with Williams, an energy infrastructure leader, for the development of a 74.8 MW solar facility. This significant step forward in increasing the diversity of energy generation was achieved with a favorable vote by the City of Lakeland Commission on Nov. 4, 2024, which followed the Utility Committee's approval vote on Nov. 1, 2024.
This ambitious solar project aligns with Lakeland Electric's commitment to provide affordable, dependable and sustainable energy to all customers. The land selected for the solar facility was formerly mined and is unsuited for traditional development, making it an ideal site for renewable energy production. The project, which will be designed and built by Williams, will significantly add to the 15 MW of solar that is currently part of the Lakeland Electric generation portfolio.
"Today marks a pivotal moment for Lakeland Electric as we work to meet the growing energy needs of our community," said Mike Dammer. "By partnering with Williams, we are taking concrete steps to expand our energy portfolio and deliver reliable, clean power to our community, all while utilizing land that would otherwise go underused."
"The solar power generation project is an opportunity for Williams to re-develop a reclaimed phosphate mine as a clean energy facility on land unsuited for traditional development," said Jaclyn Presnal, vice president of New Energy Ventures at Williams. "We are excited for the first phase, Edge Solar, to deliver electricity to Lakeland Electric's transmission system, providing renewable power to homes and businesses in the northern section of the utility's service area."
The solar facility is strategically located to maximize energy production while minimizing environmental impact. It is expected to contribute to the local economy during both the construction and operational phases, creating jobs and supporting local businesses.
The projected completion date is March 2027, and further details about the project will be shared as it progresses.
