Bismarck Fire Department Reminds Residents: Stay Safe from Carbon Monoxide this Winter.

Bismarck, ND - The Bismarck Fire Department would like to remind residents that November is carbon monoxide (CO) awareness month. Known as the "silent killer," carbon monoxide is an invisible, odorless gas that can be deadly. As temperatures drop, the risk of CO poisoning rises due to the increased use of heaters and fuel-burning appliances.

CO poisoning is preventable if we all take a few simple safety steps:

  • Install CO Detectors: Place CO detectors on each floor of your home, especially near bedrooms, and test them monthly.
  • Maintain Heating Systems: Have fuel-burning appliances and chimneys serviced yearly by a professional.
  • Never Use Outdoor Devices Indoors: Don't use portable gas stoves, generators, or grills inside the home.

What to Do if a CO Alarm Goes Off:

If your CO alarm sounds, everyone should leave the house right away and call 911 from a safe place. Don't go back inside until it's been cleared by emergency responders.
