Ramp to Southbound I-25 from Broadway is closed; New, elevated ramp will replace current ramp for better traffic flow

DENVER - Denver's Department of Transportation and Infrastructure (DOTI) would like travelers to be aware that it has permanently closed the on-ramp to southbound I-25 from Broadway at Kentucky Avenue, and is replacing the ground-level ramp with a new elevated ramp to southbound I-25 at Ohio Avenue that's expected to open before the end of the year. The new ramp will ease vehicle congestion and enhance safety as part of the I-25 and Broadway Travel and Safety Improvement Project.

While the ramp from Broadway to southbound I-25 is closed, drivers can access southbound I-25 from Mississippi Avenue and S. Buchtel Boulevard or Alameda Avenue and Kalamath Street. A detour map is available here.

Also beginning today, southbound Broadway traffic will shift slightly to the west, prohibiting a left turn from Broadway onto eastbound Ohio Avenue. Travelers going southbound on Broadway can access northbound I-25 by taking Mississippi Avenue or Alameda Avenue to Santa Fe Drive.

Travelers headed northbound on Broadway will still be able to turn right onto Ohio Avenue to access the northbound I-25 on-ramp.

There will not be any disruptions to RTD service at the I-25 and Broadway Station. Both the south entrance to the Broadway Station from Kentucky Avenue and the north entrance from Exposition Avenue and Bannock Street will remain open.

These new construction activities are part of a full slate of improvements to the interchange and surrounding area, including:

  • Adding multi-use pathways for pedestrians and cyclists.
  • Connecting the Broadway bike lane to the RTD Broadway station.
  • Installing new traffic signals at Ohio Avenue between Broadway and Lincoln Street and at Broadway and Kentucky Avenue.
  • Reconstruction of local streets, including Lincoln, Broadway, Kentucky and Ohio.
  • Reconstruction of Kentucky Avenue, combining the existing intersection with the southbound I-25 off-ramp.

The improvements are designed to make travel safer for all and improve access to RTD's Broadway Station for people who walk, roll, bike and drive.

Since the project began last summer, several milestones have been completed including:

  • Extending Bannock Road south of Exposition Avenue, providing access to the RTD Park-n-Ride from the north with improved lighting and landscaping and a new multi-use pathway.
  • Completing sanitary sewer and storm sewer work throughout the area.
  • Construction of a major portion of the new on-ramp to southbound I-25 that crosses over Broadway, which ncludes two new bridges.

After the new on-ramp to southbound I-25 opens, work on travel and safety improvements will continue through spring 2026. All work is weather dependent and schedules are subject to change.
