King's Growth in Leadership, Faith, and Education Through Diverse Careers

King was actively involved in TIP and the Servant Leadership program during her time at McMurry. Her participation in these groups allowed her to develop leadership skills, build relationships, and emphasize service. The experiences she gained through these programs opened the door to many leadership opportunities that have shaped her career since graduation.

With a Bachelor of Science degree, King began her teaching career in Merkel ISD at Tye Elementary, working with 4th and 5th graders. After 12 years in the classroom, she took time off to focus on raising her two children, Cameron and Claire. She later served as the Director of Christian Education at First Central Presbyterian Church before returning to teach 2nd grade at Austin Elementary in Abilene. King reflects on teaching during and after COVID as the most challenging experience of her career.

"I overcame it [COVID-19] the best I could-since it was still a new virus at the time-and worked incredibly hard like everyone else in education."

Navigating that difficult time helped King re-evaluate her understanding of productivity, realizing that everyone's definition of productivity is different, but it doesn't mean it's any less effective.

Her most memorable moments come from her years of teaching, as working with young children provides constant laughter and keeps her humble. Her family even suggests she write a book filled with the fun anecdotes she has collected over the years. On tough days, she finds comfort in recalling those stories, which always bring a smile to her face.

Most recently, King worked with Young Audiences of Abilene, where she gained leadership skills and experience managing programs and events, as well as collaborating with a board of directors and community leaders in the Abilene area.

In her current role as Director of Alumni Engagement at McMurry University, King expresses her love for being part of a team dedicated to the success and growth of the university. She enjoys being back on campus as both an alumnus and an employee, where the energy and passion for McMurry are evident among the faculty, staff, and students.

While her career has taken several major shifts over the past 25 years, King feels her leadership skills have only grown stronger. Though she once believed she would teach forever due to her love for education and children, her experiences have shown her that God has a plan for everyone, especially when they step out in faith.
