Court prohibits warning strike at MHH lasting several days

The warning strike on Wednesday, 16 October 2024, will result in considerable restrictions.

In the dispute with the trade union Verdi over relief for the employees of Hannover Medical School (MHH), the Labour Court today once again ruled in favour of MHH. The Hanover Labour Court upheld the action brought by the state of Lower Saxony, represented by MHH, for an interim injunction, thereby prohibiting the strike days planned by Verdi on 17 and 18 October 2024. The state had not brought an action against the first planned strike day on Wednesday, 16 October 2024. Verdi wants to stick to the strike on Wednesday.

'The prohibition of a strike lasting several days is initially positive news for patients. There will already be considerable restrictions on Wednesday as a result of the strike,' said MHH Vice President Prof Dr Frank Lammert 'Our common goal remains to negotiate a sustainable solution for MHH employees. We are therefore working constructively, hard and persistently at all levels to reach an agreement.'

MHH, the state of Lower Saxony and Verdi are currently in constructive and trusting talks. Lower Saxony's Science Minister Falko Mohrs said last Friday that he hoped to reach an agreement this week. As a state-run organisation, MHH cannot make its own wage agreements. As the state is also unable to reach a separate wage agreement for MHH without giving up its membership of the Tarifgemeinschaft deutscher Länder (TdL), Minister Mohrs has offered the union a contractual agreement.

Verdi can appeal against the interim injunction.
