Bowie State Softball Team Honored by Bowie Baysox

Minor League Team Recognized the Two-time Conference Champions

(BOWIE, Md.) - The Bowie State University softball team was honored for its back-to-back championships by the Bowie Baysox during their game against the Harrisburg Senators on September 5.

The game was part of the club's HBCU/Divine Nine theme night and featured the Bowie State Choir singing both the National Anthem and Lift Every Voice and Sing before the game.

Bowie State softball coach Ed Powell threw out the ceremonial first pitch before the game and shared how meaningful it was for the Bulldogs, who won their second straight CIAA conference championship last season, to be recognized by the Baysox and the wider Bowie community.

"I was really excited about being honored," said Powell. "It felt really good that the young ladies were being recognized for their accomplishments, especially coming from the local community."

The Baysox made multiple announcements during the game to highlight the reigning CIAA champions, and even gave a few players opportunities to take part in some of the evening's activities. Multiple players participated in different stadiums games that occurred between the innings, such as a spin the bat race and a frozen t-shirt contest. Senior shortstop Sydney Edmond took part in the frozen jersey competition with freshman shortstop Siarra Silva and thought that the stadium games were another fun way to bond with teammates while indulging in friendly competition.

"Me and Siarra, we're the most competitive people on the team. Going against her was really fun," said Edmond. "We had two of our members do spin the bat. That was fun to watch and experience."

The team enjoyed receiving recognition from the fans in attendance for their championship achievements, and the fanfare served as further motivation for the Bulldogs to seek a third conference title when they pick up their gloves again in the spring.

"That reminded us we still have a job to do," said Edmond. "The only team that has a three-peat is football. So that's our goal. Having that in your school's history, you want to be a part of that. We have one more to go."
