Bowie State Deltas Host Back to School Drive

Chapter Collected School Supplies for Rockledge Elementary School Students

(BOWIE, Md.) - School is in session, but it can be tough for students to be at their best without the right school supplies. Fortunately, members of Bowie State's Zeta Delta chapter of Delta Sigma Theta were happy to help make sure local students had what they needed to excelin the classroom.

The Zeta Delta chapter set up a donation table next to the Delta's plot near the Harriet Tubman Residence Hall on Sept. 4-5 to collect school supplies to benefit students at Rockledge Elementary School. It's become an annual tradition for the chapter to partner with local schools and conduct back-to-school drives for the students. The Deltas said they loved seeing how the campus community turned out to support the cause of equipping the Rockledge students.

"It's so awesome when we see people bring stuff," said Kamiah Miller, as senior biology major and vice president for the Zeta Delta chapter. "We do service, so it's nice to see that community members want to help us help the kids. It brings smile to our face."

Miller estimated that the chapter gathered 30 book bags and 100 notebooks along with basic hygiene items like tissues and hand sanitizer during this year's back-to-school drive. It is just one of the many community outreach events the Zeta Delta chapter plans throughout the year.

The Deltas have also partnered with Rockledge Elementary for other activities, such as speaking with the students about their college experience and performing their step routines during HBCU-themed days at the school. Miller and the other Deltas love working with the kids and doing what they can to give back to the students coming behind them in a positive way.

"We're working with them to give the students a few supplies to help them get started for the school year," said Miller. "This year's drive was a big success. We had way more items than last year, which is very exciting."
