City Council Awards Construction Contract for Sherrill Veterans Memorial Park Monument

CORPUS CHRISTI, TX - At today's regularly scheduled City Council meeting, Mayor Paulette Guajardo and the City Council awarded Marshall Company Ltd. a $715,000 construction contract for the transportation and installation of a United States Army Bell Huey Helicopter at Sherrill Veterans Memorial Park, located at 222 South Shoreline Boulevard. Funding for the project is from a recent voter-approved Bond 2024 Parks Fund.

This new memorial, the first included in the Sherrill Veterans Memorial Park Master Plan approved in March 2023, will be in the park's southeast corner.

The United States Army Bell Huey Helicopter will rest on a 15-foot-high steel pedestal. Two 26-foot-long concrete walls will frame the helicopter's base, featuring the park's name on each wall, backlit with LED lighting. In the evenings, the area will be lit to highlight the helicopter. Visitors can walk around the helicopter on a new 8,200-square-foot path on colored concrete pavers.

The project is scheduled to begin in January 2025, with estimated completion in June 2025, weather permitting.

"The U.S. Army Bell Huey Helicopter installation at Sherrill Veterans Memorial Park is a testament to our commitment to honor the sacrifices of our military heroes," said Mayor Paulette Guajardo. "This monument will stand as a lasting tribute, uniting our community in appreciation and pride for generations to come. I want to thank Councilman Pusley and community leader Mike Scott for their efforts in this initiative."

In future phases, more memorials will honor veterans from other military branches. The design for the second phase of Sherrill Veterans Memorial Park improvements will begin in Spring 2025, and the items included in this phase will be presented to the City Council for approval in Spring 2026.
