HILLPEZ-Led Teams Mobilize for the Implementation of the ABFS Projects

In a concerted effort to implement the Adaptive Balanced Fertilization Strategy (ABFS) for Corn, and Vegetables, the implementation teams led by the Department of Agriculture-Bureau Soils and Water Management (DA-BSWM)-National Soil and Water Resources Research and Development Center (NSWRRDC) for Hillyland Pedo-Ecological Zone (HILLPEZ) conducted coordination and field activities in Toledo City, Cebu, and Majayjay, Laguna from 19 to 21 June 2024.

NSWRRDC HILLPEZ Senior Agriculturist Melody M. Orogo, and Science Research Specialist II & Region VII BSWM Alternate Focal Person Engineer Wilfredo A. Gultiano, together with Regional Soils Laboratory Region 7 Science Research Specialist I Ms. Christita Castillote, and Science Research Assistant Mr. Jhunrie Tejadillo initiated the coordination activities on ABFS Corn in Toledo City, Cebu.

The Team commenced their engagement with a courtesy call and coordination meeting about the Project implementation and conduct of Technical Briefing at the Office of the Regional Executive Director of the Department of Agriculture - Regional Field Office VII. The activity was facilitated by Dr. Wilberto O. Castillo, Regional Technical Director for Research and Regulations. This was followed by meetings with the Staff of the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist and the Toledo City Administrator, Ms. Mae Delia C. Tacandong together with City Agriculturist, Ms. Estrilla P. Bargamento; and coordination with the Chief of the Regional Soils Laboratory, Ms. Emma Tayad and Regional Corn Program Focal, Ms. Lavinia Corpus.

Furthermore, the Team coordinated with the Sagay Farmers Agriculture Cooperative (SFAC) Vice President Reynante C. Bubuli to arrange the delivery of agricultural inputs, organize and extend invitations for the Technical Briefing and finalize the list of farmer beneficiaries. Benchmarking of corn production history and management practices through an initial agro-socio-economic survey was also conducted with selected corn farmers from Sagay.

Meanwhile, in Majayjay, Laguna, Senior Science Research Specialist Roosbelt P. Creencia, Science Research Specialist I Engr. Ma. Jayzelyn R. Umali, Project Development Officer Ruzzelle Jane H. Madriaga, and Administrative Aide IV Mr. Jonie V. Gallo focused on the implementation of ABFS for Vegetables from 20 to 21 June 2024. The Team made the courtesy calls to Mr. Zoilo Ama, Jr., the Municipal Agriculturist of Majayjay, Laguna, and Barangay Captain Beny Trovela of Brgy. Malinao Majayjay, Laguna.

Moreover, practical demonstrations, such as the sowing of tomato seeds using the Center's practice, were conducted for the farmer beneficiaries - Mr. Fernando Ronabio, Mr. Rey Contento, and Mr. Randy Lagubana. Lastly, the Team coordinated with a supplier for the purchase and delivery of chicken manure for the three sites covering the 7,500 square meters Technology Demonstration farm.

Headed by Mr. Joven P. Espineli, Agricultural Center Chief IV of NSWRRDC HILLPEZ and Soil and Water Access Team (SWAT) for Regions IV-A and VII, the ABFS Implementation Team operates under the guidance of BSWM Director Gina P. Nilo, Ph.D., and Assistant Director Denise A. Solano.
