Meet the Splunktern: Ramit Batra

In this next installment of our "Meet the Splunktern" series, we're featuring Ramit Batra, a Product Manager Intern working from Boulder, CO. Ramit is a Masters Student at New York University majoring in Management of Technology! Read on to learn more about Ramit's journey at Splunk.

What motivated you to apply to Splunk?

I initially heard about Splunk from one of my mentors at NYU, who is a Splunker. They spoke so highly of the culture at Splunk that it almost sounded too good to be true. After researching further, I discovered Splunk's values and was particularly struck by how 'Fun' is one of its core values. Learning about its highly regarded intern program solidified my decision to apply, and I was fortunate enough to get in.

How is your internship going thus far?

I've been loving every moment of it. This is my first internship at a tech company and in a product internship. My manager, mentor, and the entire team have been incredibly supportive, always encouraging me to ask questions and patiently answering them. Beyond work, I've enjoyed exploring Boulder, hiking, and visiting the Rocky Mountains with fellow interns. This internship has been a dream come true.

What projects are you working on?

I am working with the monetization and admin experience team under the core Splunk platform. My main focus is tackling a key customer problem regarding chargeback.

How much flexibility do you have in determining how you perform your job?

My manager set a defined goal for me, but there was considerable flexibility in how to achieve it. As a Product Manager (PM), your path often changes based on the data you gather and interview insights. We started with a basic goal and adjusted our direction based on new revelations, always aiming for customer success.

What skills have you learned at Splunk that will be valuable in your career?

The biggest piece of advice my manager gave me was to document everything. I've made this a habit from day one, which has proven to be an essential skill. Documentation helps revisit problems efficiently and provides context for the team, especially when I'm unavailable.

What has been the most memorable part of working with your team?

The product demo I presented to the Vice President (VP) of Product and other senior VPs and PMs. Presenting my work to about 50 senior-level Splunkers and having them take time out of their busy schedules to see my demo meant a lot to me.

How would you describe Splunk's culture?

Splunk's culture truly embodies its values. It's fun and open, which enables people to work at their best, fostering passion, innovation, and disruption. This culture fuels Splunk's remarkable growth.

What has been your favorite Splunktern event or activity?

It's hard to choose just one. Regarding knowledge, my favorite activities have been the Executive Talk sessions, especially with Tom Casey, our Senior VP of Products & Technology, as well as the 'Ask Me Anything' panel and ice cream networking social with Brad Murphy, VP of Engineering for Core Platform, and Andrew Hurst, VP of Engineering for Data Platform. In terms of fun, I loved the volunteering activity at Growing Gardens. I've always been into social service, and Splunk's support in this area makes me feel even prouder to work here.

What are your career goals?

My career goals include entering the tech workforce and gaining cross-functional experience while focusing on product management. I aspire to lead a product from 0-1, from discovery to launch, to understand how to build something from scratch. This experience will bring me one step closer to my ultimate dream of starting my own company, when the right idea comes.

What advice would you give someone considering interning at Splunk?

The best thing about interning at Splunk is the opportunity to work on real projects that deliver value. You'll get genuine work experience, not some dummy project like at other companies. Always speak up in team meetings and share your ideas - people at Splunk, at all levels, want to hear them. Learn from every opportunity, and don't be afraid to make mistakes. Make the most of your internship.
