Bicyclist Killed in Jefferson Davis Parish Crash

Published: 08-26-2024 | Category: Troop D

Jennings - On August 25, 2024, shortly after 9:00 p.m., Louisiana State Police Troop D began investigating a two-vehicle fatal injury crash involving a bicycle on U.S. 90 near Triangle Shell Road in Jefferson Davis Parish. The crash claimed the life of 49-year-old Shawn Maris of Mermentau.

The preliminary investigation revealed Maris was riding a bicycle eastbound on U.S. 90. At the same time, a 2013 GMC Sierra was also traveling eastbound on U.S. 90. For reasons still under investigation, Maris turned left in front of the GMC as it passed his location. The driver of the GMC was unable to avoid a collision and struck the bicycle causing Maris to be ejected. Troopers were able to determine that the bicycle was not equipped with reflectors or lights at the time of the crash.

Maris, who was not wearing a helmet, received fatal injuries and died at the scene. The driver of the GMC was properly restrained and received no injuries.

Standard toxicology samples were collected and submitted for analysis. This crash remains under investigation.

Troopers would like to remind bicyclists that Louisiana law classifies bicycles as a vehicle and requires operators to follow the same rules that apply to motorists. Troopers would also like to stress the importance of wearing an approved helmet while operating a bicycle. Properly wearing an approved helmet decreases the chances of brain injuries and increases the chances of survival.
