Glacier Park temporarily closes Alpine Sections of GTSR

WEST GLACIER, Mont. [August 28, 2024] - Going-to-the-Sun Road is closed due to dangerous road conditions caused by snow and ice. The road closed approximately at 2 pm on Wednesday, August 28 between Avalanche Creek and Jackson Glacier Overlook.

The National Weather Service issued a forecast for Wednesday, August 28, for snow expected at higher elevations of Glacier National Park, such as the alpine sections of Going-to-the-Sun Road and Logan Pass. Snow accumulations of 3 to 6 inches are expected, and there is also the chance of major snow impacts of 6 to 10 inches or more of snow.

The closure will remain in place until conditions improve. The park will continually evaluate the conditions to see when the closure can be lifted.

Visitors are encouraged to prepare for inclement weather if they plan to travel to the park this week. Check the weather forecast and park road status before you visit, dress for varying degrees of weather, carry the ten essential s, and be on alert for potential hazards on roadways and trails.
