Community urged to be extra vigilant following fatal house fire - St Huberts Island

Published: 02 Jul 2024 12:30pm

Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) is urging the community to be extra vigilant following a fatal house fire at St Huberts Island on the Central Coast this morning.

Six fire trucks and more than 30 firefighters, as well as one NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) truck, responded to reports of a blaze in Mercator Parade around 5.40am.

Upon arrival, firefighters found the property well alight and quickly got to work. They were confronted by extreme fire activity, with the wind pushing the blaze throughout the home.

Two people escaped the home after being alerted to the fire by a working smoke alarm. They were transported to hospital by NSW Ambulance for further assessment and treatment.

A third person, though, perished in the blaze.

It took firefighters just under two hours to extinguish the fire, which has also destroyed the home.

NSW Police and fire investigators are on scene, investigating where and how the blaze started.

During these cooler months, FRNSW is encouraging the community to ensure they have a working smoke alarm and a home escape plan.

Residents can book a free home fire safety visit which includes smoke alarm testing and where necessary, alarm provision and installation, free of charge.
