First Class Graduates from RSU Predecessor Institution 114 Years Ago Today

On June 18, 1910, 114 years ago today, Rogers State University held its first commencement ceremony. Back then, RSU was known as Eastern University Preparatory School (EUPS), which was the founding institution that eventually evolved into RSU.

During this inaugural commencement, which took place at the Windsor Opera House in downtown Claremore, five graduates received their diplomas, including Nannie Alberty, Elna Helm, Stella Ostenberg, Madeline Webb and Jesse Willis. They marked the beginning of a long educational tradition that continues to stand and thrive at RSU today.

The ceremony featured addresses from prominent speakers, including Evan D. Cameron, the State Superintendent of Education, and Senator E.M. Landrum, who represented the Tahlequah area in the Oklahoma Senate. The event was a significant milestone not only for the graduates, but also for the community of Claremore. It set the stage for the growth and development of higher education in Claremore over the next century and beyond.

Over the decades, EUPS evolved into RSU, which today stands as an ever-flourishing university that offers a wide range of bachelor's and associate degrees across its campuses in Claremore, Bartlesville and Pryor. RSU continues to honor its rich history while preparing students for success in the modern world, carrying forward the legacy established by its inaugural graduates 114 years ago.

The university's accreditation as a four-year university in 2000 was a pivotal moment in RSU's history, marking its evolution from a junior college to a comprehensive institution capable of granting bachelor's degrees. Today, RSU continues to expand its academic offerings by adding new programs to meet the evolving needs of students and industries.
