Rockets and Landers and Slime, Oh My!

August 19, 2024

Dozens of Maine's future scientists turned out for space exploration, engineering and life-science learning last week in Bangor, as Educate Maine, the Maine Discovery Museum and the Challenger Learning Center partnered for a Summer STEM evening.

"As the school year approaches, it's fun to take stock of all the science that happens year round-including in the summer-in Maine," said Kate Howell, director of workforce partnerships for Educate Maine. "It was great to see these STEM learners and their families come out for this event

Some of the activities included:

• Tours of Spacelab at the Challenger Center with a chance to use robotic arms, train for space walking, or build your own Rover
• Space engineering challenges from the Discovery Museum-can you safely deliver the payload to the lunar surface?
• Life-science experiments aboard the Maine Mobile Biolab with everybody's favorite take-home: Slime!

"Maine Discovery Museum has been doing educational outreach and enrichment for years, and it's always great to team up with long-time partners to get families excited about science," said Kate Dickerson, the museum's executive director.
