Croydon Council’s housing allocations scheme – Have your say!

Croydon Council is inviting all residents, leaseholders, partner organisations, housing associations, and public and voluntary organisations to share their views on proposed changes to the housing allocation scheme.

With a nearly 18% rise in social housing applications over the last year, these updates are designed to make the system fairer, clearer, and more supportive for those in need.

Proposals include changing the length of time someone must have lived in the borough before being accepted onto the housing register - from three to six years. Changes also include reviewing how housing is allocated to care experienced young people and sheltered housing to those over 60 with additional health needs.

Additionally, the Council plans to set a more realistic processing time for housing applications, moving from the current 10-day goal-which has been difficult to meet over a number of years-to a more achievable 30 working days, similar to the standard in other London boroughs. This change will allow the Council to process applications more efficiently and improve the experience for everyone.

As part of the review, the Council is also proposing to make the allocation scheme easier to understand by reducing its length and providing a user-friendly guide to help residents navigate their housing options.

"These changes reflect our commitment to services that meet residents' needs and priorities and align with my vision to restore confidence in Croydon.

"Your feedback is essential to get this right. I urge everyone to share your views, tell us what matters most to you and your family, and help us shape a housing allocation scheme that reflects your priorities and supports those who need it most."

Jason Perry, Executive Mayor of Croydon
